Africa’s formwork industry is entering a new era of growth as construction activity surges across the continent. In South Africa alone, the sector is forecast to exceed USD 327.5 million by 2028, driven by major infrastructure developments and rapid urbanization. The growing need for durable and efficient formwork solutions is reshaping traditional practices and opening up new opportunities for manufacturers and contractors alike.
While timber formwork remains common on many sites, there is a clear shift toward modern systems made of aluminum, steel, and plastic. These engineered solutions are valued for their precision, faster installation, and longer service life, all of which help reduce labor costs and shorten project timelines. Plastic formwork is gaining particular traction thanks to its lightweight design and recyclability, supporting the industry’s focus on more sustainable construction.
Large-scale infrastructure investments are a major catalyst for change. Across Africa, governments are funding roads, bridges, railways, and airports—often through public-private partnerships—creating steady demand for advanced formwork technology. Despite the positive outlook, the industry still faces hurdles. High upfront costs for advanced formwork systems can be a barrier, particularly for smaller firms. Skilled labor shortages and logistics challenges—such as transporting large components to remote sites—add further complexity.
