In 2025, the formwork industry is facing fresh pressure on its raw material supply chains, as rising demand from infrastructure and building projects pushes cost and sustainability concerns to the forefront. The global formwork systems market is projected to grow steadily through 2032, expanding from roughly USD 7.4 billion in 2025 to more than USD 10.6 billion by the end of the period. Concrete formwork in particular is forecasted to rise at a solid pace over the next few years, reflecting continued investment in high-rise, transport and energy infrastructure.

One clear shift is toward more durable and reusable materials. Steel-framed wooden systems are gaining attention because they combine structural strength, long service life and reuse with lower waste—a direct response to stricter rules on disposal and resource efficiency. At the same time, aluminum formwork is accelerating in many markets because of its light weight, ease of handling, speed in assembly and smoother concrete finish, which can reduce finishing work on site.

Yet this transition isn’t without cost. The prices of essential raw inputs like steel, aluminum and quality plywood are fluctuating due to global supply chain constraints, energy cost volatility and trade dynamics. To counteract these pressures, some manufacturers are vertically integrating raw material production, producing a large share of their needs in-house to stabilize costs, ensure quality and shorten lead times.

Beyond cost, sustainability is becoming a non-negotiable. Buyers and regulators alike are pushing for certified wood, lower VOC resins and designs that maximize reuse cycles. The industry is also experimenting with hybrid systems and alternative composites to reduce reliance on metals or full timber, and investing in digital design to cut waste further.

In short, the raw materials underpinning formwork are under dual pressure: they must be cost-effective and technically robust, and increasingly eco-compliant. Over the next few years, suppliers able to balance these demands through supply chain resilience, innovation and transparent sourcing are likely to stand out as market leaders.
